Cecil T. Pinkham

BUXTON- Cecil T. Pinkham, age 92, of Oakwood Drive, passed away on Nov. 25, 2011 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House.

Cecil was born in Buxton on Oct. 27, 1919, the son of the late George and Elma (Harriman) Pinkham. He attended Buxton Schools and went to work for Sanders Engineering, the Army Corps of Engineers as a subcontractor, Ellis C. Snodgrass as a concrete pump operator, built homes and worked for his son Ted, who owned the Salmon Falls Country Club at that time. During these years, Cecil also worked as a lobsterman. He fondly remembered that time as the best days of his life.

Cecil was a member of the First Congregational Church of Buxton, and a 57 year member of Buxton Masonic Lodge #115 AF&AM. He was also on the local school board and harbormaster for Scarborough when he lived on Pine Point.

He is predeceased by his beloved wife whom he married on Jan. 8, 1938- Ruth (Quimby) Pinkham; son Theodore "Ted" Pinkham; daughter - Barbara Elwell; and his siblings.

Cecil leaves behind twelve grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; and 16 great great grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be on Monday, Nov. 28, from 6-8 PM at the Dennett, Craig & Pate Funeral Home, located on the corners of Rts. 202 and 4A (13 Portland Rd) in Buxton (Bar Mills). During the visitation at 7:30 PM, members of Buxton Masonic Lodge #115 will perform funeral honors. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday morning at 11 AM. Rev. Karen Christensen will officiate. Burial will follow at South Buxton Cemetery. www.DCPate.com

Bernard "Bernie" Groves

BUXTON/GROVEVILLE- Bernard "Bernie" Groves, 68, passed away at his home on Groveville Road in Buxton on Sunday, December 4th, 2011 after his brief battle with terminal cancer.

Bernie worked for the United Parcel Service (UPS) for thirty years, retiring at age 55, amassing a safe driving record for the entire time. After retiring, he enjoyed spending time at his camp, four wheeling, snowmobiling, woodworking, traveling, or just reading a good book. When not working or at camp, Bernie was active within the town, serving with the Buxton Fire Department for 29 years. He was forced to step down from his position as Captain after sustaining injuries he received while performing hose inspections for the department. After the accident, he concentrated his efforts on finding and applying for grants that would improve services that the fire department provides. Bernie also just recently served as the assistant director of the Emergency Management Agency (EMA) for Buxton. After he retired, he could be seen visiting with people around town, always with a smile on his face.

He is survived by his wife, Audrey Groves; his daughter Sherry Ames and her husband Chris of San Diego, California; his son Charlie Groves and his wife Lisa of Durham, Maine. He is preceded by his granddaughter Amber Meadows and is survived by his grandchildren Wendy Nobles, Chip Meadows, and Ashley Groves, along with several great grandchildren.

Bernie's family will be celebrating his life with a memorial service on Thursday Dec. 8 at 6:00 p.m. at the Dennett Craig & Pate Funeral Home on Rts. 202 and 4A (13 Portland Road) in Buxton (Bar Mills). The celebration will continue after the service at the home where everyone is invited and where the family hopes to see you there. www.DCPate.com

Roger A. Betts

BUXTON- Roger A. Betts, age 81, passed away on Dec. 7, 2011 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough.

He was born in Saugus, MA on July 6, 1930, a son of the late Leroy and Eleanor (Cameron) Betts.

After Roger graduated from Samuel D. Hanson High School in Buxton, he enlisted into the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in the Philippines during the Korean War.

Roger was a machinist by trade. After serving in the Air Force, Roger moved the family to Cary, NC where he learned the machinist trade at Curlee Machine Shop. Upon returning to Maine, Roger worked at several different places before settling in at the SD Warren Research Department, where he worked his way up to a supervisory position. Roger also was in charge of the construction and operation of the Otto Building on Gambo Road in Windham. He retired from SD Warren in 1992 after 30 plus years of service.

He enjoyed home improvement projects, working in his woodlot, reading about World War II, and mastering the computer; however, spending time with his wife and family was what was most important to him.

Roger is predeceased by his first wife, Priscilla Berry Betts, brothers-Wilbur, Harold, and Leroy Betts Jr.; and sister Betty Halloran. He is survived by his beloved wife- "Bonnie" Bonita (Atkins) Betts, whom he married on Sept. 23, 1978; son- Peter Betts and his wife Sherri of Gray; grandchildren- Alicia Richards of Buxton, Megan and Tim Bright of Gray, Cameron Betts and Jared Betts of Gray; great grandchildren- Olivia Kimball Richards and Landon Daniel Richards of Buxton- sisters- Barbara Betts Pease of Buxton and Carol Betts Sanborn of Buxton; and
many other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, Dec. 11 from 1-2 PM at the Dennett, Craig & Pate Funeral Home, located on the corners of Rts 202 and 4A (13 Portland Rd) in Buxton (Bar Mills). A funeral service will immediately follow at the funeral home at 2 PM with Pastor Darwin Vail officiating. Burial with military honors will be private amongst Roger's family at South Buxton Cemetery. www.DCPate.com
